You can shelter money, avoid nasty taxes and bash some gays all at the same time.
Closeted Gay Republican Threatened
31 01 2006There has been a lot of buzz today about this post over at BlogActive where Mike Rogers threatens to out a married senator as a public bathroom cruising queen if he votes for the confirmation of Alito. NRO’s The Corner and a lot of commenters on the BlogActive site suggest this to be the criminal act of blackmail.

Brownback Causes Stir
31 01 2006The Brownback brouhaha is a little misguided. While he most likely does think of Sweden as a country full of fruits, he wasn’t saying that in the infamous Rolling Stone article. What he was doing is much more frightening from a secular nation/seperation of church and state point of view. He was quoting biblical scripture because he believes:
“This” — being senator, running for president, waving the flag of a Christian nation — “is about serving one constituent.” He raises a hand and points above him.”
To Sam Brownback being elected to the Senate or the Presidency is not about serving representing the people, it is about serving God and transforming America into a right wing, evangelical Christian nation following God’s laws. The man is a spooky incarnation of a growing movement. Anyway, he would never be so insensitive (or straightforward for that matter) to actually call gay people fruits.

As The Curtain Falls
31 01 2006NBC sitcom Will and Grace takes its final bow May 18th after 8 seasons and many awards including this year’s SAG award to Sean Hays for outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series. Many in the gay community have taken pot shots at this show over the years for its use of stereotypes and the practically asexual character of Will. But Wayne Besen sums it up when he writes:
“The lesson of… Will & Grace was so instrumental: Once you allow gay families into your living room, they are inevitably accepted into the neighborhood of shared humanity.”
Will and Grace was a major step in the on-going conversation between straight and gay America. It opened doors. Pioneers don’t always get it right but they light the path for those who follow. Every Ennis del Mar of the future owes a little bit to Jack McFarland.

A Gay Obsession
31 01 2006Katy Mcky writes in a wacky little column about the thumper’s fear of the homosexualization of America. An interesting take and I don’t agree with a lot of it but there is one part where I think she might be on to something:
“Parshall and others assert that homosexuality is sin. Thus, if one is straight and frames homosexuality as sin, it’s the sweetest sin, for it’s not one’s sin. This gives homosexuality an infinite shelf life. It’s never grows stale, for whereas it demands change of others, it requires no personal change. No sacrifice. So long as one is straight and heterosexuality demarcates purity, one is permanently pure.”
It has been my experience with the church that many who profess faith tend to find the sin in others much quicker than in themselves. It is easy to hate that which you are not and will never be.

Ann Coulter’s Supreme Joke Offensive
27 01 2006Other than Andrew, will the right finally call Ann Coulter the demagogue that she is? Imagine if Maureen Dowd had suggested poisoning Justice Scalia. The right would be carrying on about “moonbats” and “wacky liberals.” They would certainly and rightfully call that offensive and they should do the same here.

Blowhard is now The Central Front
27 01 2006Or is that vice versa? Anyway, the merge of The Central Front and Blowhard has been accomplished. As the author of The Central Front, it is nice to now have all the posts in one location. Unfortunately comments were lost in the import.
The Central Front has ceased operation and all posts will now be on Blowhard.

Oprah On Brokeback Mountain
27 01 2006You know what they say. Once you go Oprah:
“The greatest love story since Gone with the Wind and Titanic. This movie changed my life.” via (but not confirmed by) Andrew Sullivan
Seems Oprah has a heart on for the film Brokeback Mountain and its cast. All kidding aside, Oprah does hold sway over a large portion of the American public and her support of this film and its theme will be a very positive thing for the gay community. Show Oprah some love.
