When speaking of the actor George Clooney, Andrew wrote this little bon mot:
“You’re real pretty; you’re a serviceable movie actor; but please, please keep your politics to yourself.”
I have never understood why someone who is an actor or entertainer should keep their politics/opinions to themselves. To me it is an elitist statement, sort of an assumption that someone who is “only an actor” could not have the intellectual competence to have an informed opinion.
Mr. Clooney of course has every right to speak, write and/or publish any opinion he might have. Simply because he has the celebrity to get his ideas attention should not factor into his ability to exercise his rights. How do we think Mr. Sullivan might feel if someone wrote “ You’re gay; you’re a serviceable columnist; but please, please keep your politics to yourself.”
I do not think George ‘Loony Tunes’ Clooney is intellectually competent, so does that allow me to tell him to shut up about politics?
madmouser, perhaps if you direct that criticism to George Bush, you can at least appear consistent.
Even idiots have the right to speak their piece. I think George speaks with more bravery than many in the press. I like having his voice in the mix.
